Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 2026
Short version: DitherCam does not collect, store, or share any personal data. Everything stays on your device.
1. Who We Are
DitherCam is developed and published by Stefano Fois, an independent developer, who is also the data controller for the purposes of this policy. His portfolio is at krdesign.it. If you have any questions about this policy, contact info@krdesign.it.
2. Information We Collect
We do not collect, transmit, or store your personal information on our own servers. Specifically:
- Photos & camera. Photos and videos you capture or import are processed and stored locally on your device. They are not uploaded to us or to any third party — DitherCam has no backend server of any kind.
- No account. The app does not require an account, a subscription, or an in-app purchase, and does not ask for your name, email, or any contact details.
- No face or biometric data. The app has no face detection or face recognition capability at all.
- No tracking. The app includes no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs and does not track you across apps or websites. It sends nothing to us — no usage events, no crash reports, no device or advertising identifiers, no location data.
3. Permissions We Request
The app requests the following device permissions, used exclusively on-device:
Camera
Used solely to display the live camera feed with dither and halftone effects applied in real time. Camera frames are processed locally and never stored or transmitted.
Photo Library (read)
Used to let you choose a photo or a video from your library and apply effects to it. The selected item is processed locally on your device: for a video, every frame is rendered on the device and the audio track is discarded.
Photo Library (write)
Used only when you explicitly tap the Save button, to save the processed photo or video to your photo library. Nothing is saved without your action.
4. Algorithms and Credits
The effects are original implementations, written for this app from the published descriptions of well-known image-processing techniques. No third-party code, engine or library is bundled in the app. The techniques themselves are long-established and are named here after the people who published them: Floyd–Steinberg error diffusion (Robert W. Floyd and Louis Steinberg, 1976), Bayer ordered dithering (Bryce Bayer, 1973), Voronoi tessellation (Georgy Voronoy), Truchet tiles (Sébastien Truchet), Sobel edge detection (Irwin Sobel), and value/fractal noise of the kind described by Ken Perlin. Halftone and ASCII rendering are classic techniques with no single author.
5. People in Screenshots and Previews
The people shown in the App Store screenshots, in the app previews, on the DitherCam website and in the app's own onboarding are not real people: they are synthetic images generated with AI tools, used purely to demonstrate the effects on a face. No photograph of an identifiable person is used in the promotional material, and no biometric data is collected, processed or stored — by the app or by us. The pictures you see inside the app are your own, and they never leave your device.
6. Statistics Inside the App
The app keeps a few counters — how many photos and videos you have saved, which filters you used, how many days you have used it — to show you the Statistics and Achievements screens. These counters live only on your device, are never transmitted, are not synced to iCloud, and are not visible to us or to anyone else. Deleting the app deletes them.
7. iCloud Sync
If you keep it on, the app syncs your own settings — theme, language, favourites, palettes and custom effects — through your iCloud account, using Apple's key-value storage. The data travels between your devices and Apple's servers under your Apple ID; we have no access to it and no way to read it. It is on by default and can be turned off at any time in the app's menu. Photos and videos are never involved.
8. Children's Privacy
This app is rated 4+ and does not knowingly collect any information from children or any other users, as described in this policy.
9. Changes to This Policy
If we update this privacy policy, the new version will be published at this URL with an updated date at the top. We encourage you to review it periodically.
